The traditional costume

The traditional costume of Bisiacaria consists of three types for women and girls and one for men and boys and they all conform strictly to our historical research.
The three female models represent three different historical periods: the dress with the waistcoat was already being worn in the late 16th century; the one with the tasselled shawl, which was most common among the lower classes, is from the the second half of the 19th century; the model with the jacket buttoned at the back is typical of the end of the 19th century and clearly shows the influence of fashion at that time.
Common to the three female models is the wide skirt with pleated waistband covered by an apron; all women wore wooden clogs or dark fabric slippers. A particular characteristic of the women from Bisiacaria was the way they wore their headscarves, secured with a safety pin so that the edges were left free. In winter the dress was completed by the addition of a dark woollen shawl.
The male costume has calf- or knee- length trousers and a fabric waistcoat with a white collarless shirt underneath. Coarse cotton socks, clogs or slippers, a hat and, in winter, a dark woollen cloak, completed the costume. Typical accessories are hand made wicker baskets and umbrellas made of black cotton.
